Outlook MSG Files throw 404 Response as the Target of Hyperlinks

Most browsers will open or at least try to download any file type at the target of a hyperlink; however, I recently found that Outlook emails with the extension .msg result in a 404 - File Not Found response when linked to.

This response is very confusing. I spent some time reviewing the file's location as well as the link's syntax, and eventually converted it to a .txt file to verify that all addresses are valid. The issue appears to be only with the msg file extension.

This occurs in Internet Explorer, FireFox and Chrome- clearly, the issue must be on the web server side, especially if we are receiving a 404. After some research and testing, I verified that a solution is available in IIS.

Solution

With two simple steps you can configure IIS to handle the viewing of .msg files. Just follow the instructions below:

Open up IIS and navigate to the Mime Types.

Add a new Mime Type for the .msg extension as a "application/octet-stream"
